Saint Joseph: master wine of Rhone
On the northern side of the Rhone Valley, the Saint-Joseph appellation is one of the region's masters. On the right bank, it stretches on over 45 kilometers of hills, this AOC comprises 26 communes spread over the Loire and Ardèche. With a subtlety: having steep slopes, its vines have adopted a terraced format. With a south/south-east exposure, this organization, used since Antiquity, takes place on shale soils.
Saint-Joseph wines are primarily red wines. The Saint-Joseph are an excellent illustration of the use of syrah. Not long ago, red wines were made only from this type of grape. However, a minimal use of roussanne and marsanne is now possible in these wines from the Côtes-du-Rhône. All the white wines of this appellation are made of these two white grape varieties. The result are complex and elegant wines, which were once served at the tables of tsars. Today, they offer mostly fruit flavors, with touches of blackcurrant and blackberries, and accompanied by spices and pepper. If you have a bottle of Saint-Joseph, contact Vins Grands Crus: everyone can sell their wine at market prices.
